April 2009

Spring has been sneaking up on us here for the past 2-3 weeks. Well, it did snow an inch or so last week, but it is spring. Really, I promise. Anyway, almost all of the snow is gone and it has been in the 60's in the afternoons. So I figured, what they hey, time to get out those flip flops! I'm not the only one in sandals and capris, and I've even seen quite a few people in shorts. Spring here is weird!

I am finishing with my 2 classes, and have been working hard to get my assignments done. I am also working hard to get all my stuff done for school– why is everything due at the end of the year when there are special activities and presentations every other day? On the plus side, there's much less to plan when the days are filled with field trips, talent shows, art specialists, presentations for the library and parks and rec…

16 more days! I plan to wear flip flops for all of them. :)

R and I are trying out an organic farm cooperative. We are signed up to get a box of fresh produce every 2 weeks. It is a little expensive, but the produce is good quality and organic, and it makes us eat things we normally wouldn't dream of. Things like leeks (I'm going to braise them with carrots and olive oil) and bok choy (no clue) and blood oranges (see above).

R made juice from three of the blood oranges we received this week, and it made the prettiest juice I've ever seen. It might also have been the tartest fruit juice I've ever tasted, but the freshness and prettiness made up for it. (Would it have been better with vodka? Or champagne? One can only speculate…)

We also had some homemade waffles. (I halved the recipe and added extra vanilla. It made about 6 waffles in our sandwich/waffle/panini maker.) Now I suppose I must do the rest of the laundry and grade my papers and read for my research class all the other fun tasks I saved up for Sunday. Dang it!

How are you spending your Sunday?

Well, we're doing considerably better here than we were a month ago, when this pic was taken. Today it was about 30 degrees F (-1C), which is nice. (It was also -10 F (-23 C) this morning, but we'll take what we can get.)

The sun now rises before a leave for work (nice) and sets pretty late– almost at 9:00 p.m. The sun sneaks up on you in the "spring" here. It will be cold and snowy and not all that spring like, but the sun will begin making its entrance. I like it. I like it way more than losing the light in fall.

One of the little boys in my class is hoping the snow will be gone by his birthday on April 30. Last year we had a lovely blizzard. I hope he's right this year.

Happy spring to you! Are there buds and butterflies where you live? Please do share. :)
