I had the most amazing experience on Sunday as we drove out of town and up onto the ridge that borders the Tanana River. As we got farther from Fairbanks and higher in elevation, the ice fog began to lift.
First we could see just a hint of blue skies, then little by little we rose above the fog. From the ridge we could see the fog below us, covering the river and the town. It was completely quiet and beautiful.
Because of the temperature inversion we experience in Fairbanks in winter, the hillside was considerably warmer than town, -28 degrees compared to -40 F (-33 to -40 C). To me it felt, if not warm, at least tolerable.
It's good to know that the fog is escapable and not eternal.
Is there anything else you'd like to know about cold, cold weather in Alaska? Or do you just want to tell me my photos are pretty? ![]()

Your pictures are VERY pretty! Here in Anchorage it is still in the negatives, but I hear 30ish by next week. I moved to Anchortown for the warmer temps!!

your photos are lovely. what kind of camera do you have?

I can't believe that people can actually function in that kind of weather. Do schools close down because of the cold?

Thanks, Karen! I have to agree that winters are much milder in Anchorage. BUT, you get lots more snow and your summers are substatially colder. So there.
OK, so it's no use trying to make things sound rosy when it's -40 here. But I can try.
Thank you, Frances. It is a Canon Powershot SX110. I have had it for maybe a month and I like it a lot!
Peter– For sure it gets tough when it gets this cold! You just go from home to work/school and stay indoors as much as possible. School is almost never canceled here. It might be canceled due to ice fog, if it's so thick buses can't drive, but never because of low temps alone.

Pretty pictures! I think if I lived there I would just hibernate all winter. Make quilts, bake bread, eat soup. Bake cookies! Drink vodka! Happy 2009, Liz!

Thank you! I wouldn't wish ice fog on anyone, but it sure was beautiful to see it all spread out like that.
