life in alaska02 Jan 2009 04:28 pm

It's my winter break right now, but I've spent much of the last week indoors as it's been extremely cold here. Temps have hovered from -30 to -45 F (-34 to -43 C) for the past 7 days. It's been great to catch up some on reading and movie watching and some home organization. Though as you can see from the above pic, venturing too far from a nice lap blanket and cup of tea seems like a scary prospect. :)

R and I have actually been pretty lucky and have not had too many issues with our new home during this cold weather. Frost does form inside our windows and doors, though. This is from our humid breath– it hits the cold windows and forms pockets of frost and ice. Ironically, the frost is worse because we have good, airtight windows. The humid air can't escape through any drafts, and thus forms this frost.

We haven't had any issues with the plumbing, electricity or the furnace. I know many people here have. I'll take a little frost, I guess.

Would you like to know anything else about life at -40?

Basically, we stay indoors if possible! You can drive if you really need to, but it's best to avoid it. And to make really filling, warm food like chicken and dumplings. Mmmmmm.

The door knob pic looks like something out of a horror movie . . . . . ALASKA! You can't escape the cold! Brrrrrrr! Stay snuggly!
