These scones were easy to make and so sweet and tasty. The recipe calls for a lot of vanilla, so they had a nice vanilla flavor on top of the dried cherries. Mmmmmm. Easy and yum.

Cherry Scones with White Chocolate
[adapted from sconerecipes.net]

Ingredients

2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup unsalted, cold butter
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 egg (+ 1 extra egg for egg wash)
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon coarse sugar
1/2 cup dried cherries
1/2 cup white chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  3. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut chilled butter into small 1/2-inch size cubes and blend into flour mixture.
  5. In a small bowl, stir together the cream, egg, and vanilla.
  6. Pour cream mixture into flour mixture and stir to combine.
  7. Fold in cherries and white chocolate chips.
  8. Lightly flour work surface and hands. Pat dough to a 1/2-inch thickness. Using a 2 inch round biscuit cutter cut out rounds and place 2 inches part on prepared cookie sheet. Gather scraps and repeat until dough is used.
  9. In a small bowl, stir egg and 1 teaspoon of water together.
  10. Lightly brush top of scones with egg wash mixture.
  11. Sprinkle tops of scones with coarshe sugar
  12. Bake 12-14 minutes or until lightly browned. Don't overbake them; they will be soft at first. Cool on a wire rack.

Happy baking!

Here's what's hanging out in my delicious bookmarks for this week.

cooking

  • I know it's sacrilege, but I am not the biggest fan of pancakes. I can get on board with some savory corn pancakes, though. Will be making these soon. Possibly tomorrow, as I have all the ingredients to make them.

things to make and do

  • These Japanese style books are beautiful and not too hard to make. Smallish ones could probably be done by kids with help.

Happy weekend! How nice that we still have one day of rest!

I took a stab at making these wonderful homemade yeast rolls, and they were spectacular. They took a long time to make, with 4 1/2 hours total rise time, but the results were so worth it! I think I have started a tradition.

And though I'm wary of jinxing myself for next year, everything I cooked and baked turned out well! Nothing was burnt or dry or anything like that. Well, the gravy was a little salty, but that's it.

We had:
-a brined turkey breast
-gravy
-mashed potatoes
-potatoes au gratin with gruyere and cheddar (more than one potato dish is totally a good thing)
-sweet corn with butter and cream
-stuffin' muffins
-a lovely beaujolais
-major dessert overload at R's parents later that evening. Yikes!

I am thankful to be in my home with my love. It was a perfect Thanksgiving. Also, I am torturing R and starting a little holiday scrapbook where we each write a little bit about what we did during the current holiday. She humored my by writing in it– but she wrote about how much she wants a big flat-screen TV! Ha ha.

How great are these hilarious paper bag puppets? I put out the bags, felt, yarn, beads and scrap paper and let the kids have at it. I love the blue one with the glasses, with its wonderful brown hair. I made the one in the purple dress as an example, but maybe you couldn't tell that since I have essentially the crafting skills of a 7 year old. Ha!

We have a free choice time on Friday afternoons (on Wednesday this short week), and I've been trying to put out a simple project in addition to the legos and checkers that the kids generally go for. I didn't have anything pre-planned for today, but the bags and felt and whatnot were handy in my art supply cabinet. In the past we've done lots of beading and collage work, and learned to do simple embroidery. Stamps, pipe cleaners and watercolors are also a hit. What other simple, crafty activities might 7 and 8 year olds like?
