R and I went on a weekend trip to Denali National Park this weekend. We got a special deal on train tickets to the park and an overnight stay at one of the resorts. This was my 4th time to the park, so it definitely wasn't new, but we had a lot of fun anyway. Well, except that R was terrified of the shaking and rocking and rattling on the train, so I had to spend the trip there and pack (8 hours total) trying to distract her. But she was fine once we were there. ;)

We went to see the sled dogs at the park, and a litter of super cute husky puppies. We did a bunch of kitschy touristy shopping, and we spent a lot of time just walking around. We didn't make it into the park itself this time, but that was OK.

I spent way too much money this weekend, but I guess that's what vacations are for.

I you've been reading my facebook or looking in on flickr you've probably read that my Nana (mom's mom) passed away a couple of weeks ago. I flew out to Chicago last week for a super whirlwind trip. It took 8 hours each way and $1000 to fly there, and I only had 2 full days there. It was nice to see my family and all of my cousins and aunts and uncles. The funeral itself was pretty nice, short and full of nice Scottish details. My mom arranged for a bagpiper to come and play for us, and we ended the service by singing Auld Lang Syne.

Now my grandpa is 90 years old and fully alone, and no one is quite sure what to do with him. He is an old, cantankerous, Irish alcoholic, and it seems highly unlikely that anyone will be able to get him to go to an assisted living facility or move in with anyone. I guess those are the choices we make in life.

Rainbows are nice, though, aren't they? Happy Labor Day. :)
