January 2007

This is the first true sprout to appear from our batch of mystery plants. The kids picked choice 1, 2, or 3. Choice 2 is a white bean, but they won't learn what it is until the plants are all grown up. Isn't it sweet? I was going to get a full-spectrum lamp, but they seem to be doing fine under a 75 watt bulb.

Things are busy, but the kids seem to have reached a good place. They work pretty hard for me, and behavior problems are much less of an issue. From this point forward May seems visible and attainable. That's a good thing, because this has not been an easy year. It's been…character building. For me, and for the kids. They come from pretty dysfunctional homes, with a lot of relocating and upheaval and abuse and lack of parenting and all of those other peripheral issues. That makes the small things, like this tiny bean sprout, all the more miraculous. Religious persuasion aside, how neat is it to see new life grow?

The kids are like a nest full of baby birds today, hopping about and chirping for my attention. And pecking at each other, just a bit. I got a new student today, who seems sweet with a nice little helping of ornery. Aren't they all?

It's been bitterly cold here, punctuated with some of the exciting things that come with winter in Alaska. My car tire is leaking and I just can't bear to take it to the tire shop for repair– not at 40 below. Last night we woke at 3:30, startled by a loud crash. We looked through the house and couldn't find anything awry. The source of the noise was discovered this morning– a huge tree branch had snapped off of the birch tree and landed on the power lines to the house. It blocked our driveway, but we were able to saw off some of the low-hanging branches. The power company was supposed to come and do the rest. I hope they did and that the lines are intact.

I want nothing so much as a nice latte and a bowl of chicken stew with dumplings. In the meantime, I suppose I'll settle for a cup of coffee and some cheez its. Somehow it's not the same, though.
