I've been here for most of the last month, at least from about 7:00AM until 4:30PM or so most days. Then I've been sitting on my couch doing things like cutting strings and grading papers and collecting collage materials.
My kids have come a long way since my first week in the classroom with them. The teacher they had for the first 2 months of school, while competent, was hardly fully invested in the school year. The kids suffered for it, and were glad to have some routines and procedures to follow with me. Their home lives are pretty unstable, overall, and they like having a place where routines are set and things go a certain way.
I'm learning a lot about second graders and their capabilities, good and bad. I've consistently overestimated their academic abilities– and consistenly underestimated their sweetness and helpfulness and honest desire to please. I really like them a lot. Not that I'm not glad for the long weekend.
R and I had Thanksgiving with her family today, and it was tasty and chaotic, just like Thanksgiving should be. We made the pies and butter corn and the green bean casserole. There was also turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing and ham and shrimp and Alaskan king crab legs and deviled eggs apple crisp and a cake and…bruschetta? We like things semi-traditional.
This year I'm thankful for my love and my kitties and gainful employment and peace and quiet and long weekends and candy and sugar. You know, the basics. Happy Thanksgiving!
