This is my pizza costume for Halloween– which I am not so much wearing right now as keeping in a big pile on my desk. It's just too hot and cumbersome to keep on all day.

You can also see our beautiful Halloween lawn decorations and the beginning of our winter snow.

We are prepared for mass quantities of trick or treaters. I am preparing to not eat all of the Halloween candy. No, really.

October 27, 2005

16 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 Celsius).
Light snow.
Sunrise 9:23AM, sunset 5:45PM.

I froze my tush off yesterday doing recess duty– and I had on a fleece and a shell parka, a hat, gloves and warm boots.
I guess it's winter, eh?

Monday again, and I'm always more tired than I really ought to be. I made raspberry tea today, and took it with me to my unbearable 3 hour class. Fortunately for me, there was freezing rain and the roads were a nightmare, so she let us go early.

I'm skipping out on the class next week, on account of Halloween. R's niece and nephews are coming over here for snacks and trick or treating. Apparently our neighborhood has mass quantities of trick or treaters. (Oddly, in Fairbanks it's too cold to just let kids walk, so their parents drive them from house to house.) We've been buying candy for weeks, and we spent a good two hours this weekend stuffing 6 piece portions into those small size snack bags. We have 300 of them. I'll let you know if it turns out to be enough.

I finished with my pizza costume yesterday, and it's way cool. It's just a sort of felt smock, with pepperoni and mushrooms and olives hot glued onto the front. I feel fairly certain that it's identifiable as a pizza, so that's good. I'll post some pictures come Halloween.

I never got the children back yesterday, once they saw the quarter-sized snowflakes falling outside the window. They all crouched along the wide windowsill, pretending to read their books but really watching wide-eyed. Even in the land of eternal darkness and 7 month winters they can still be excited by a good snowfall. I took some black and white pictures of them, with their little legs curled under and their heads resting in their hands. One picture I especially love– she's posed like a reader, but her eyes are squinting at the bright snow, and she's smirking just the tiniest bit.

It's beautiful out today, with everything coated by an icing glaze of crunchy snow. The forecast freezing rain and sleet never materialized, and we didn't get that delayed day we were hoping for. You never do, though, do you?

Today is our anniversary. It's been 2 years, which feels like a really long time and also feels really short, if that's possible. We had fondue on Saturday (major diet no-no, but it's a special occasion) and did gifts then, too.

Two years ago I wrote lyrics from Here Comes the Sun and something cryptic about there being flowers in the cabin. Now there are flowers on my desk and R and I have a house and 2 cats and 2 years worth of memories. I would never have believed it would be this good.

I love you, baby.
