July 2005

Summer is winding down, and I'm somewhat convinced that if I cover my ears and go "la la la la la, I can't hear you!" then maybe I'll be able to squeeze out a few more weeks. As it is I have just one more week of camp, and then I'm taking a week-long course for substitutes. I'm sure it will be insufferable, but I'm getting paid for it.

I'm surprised that the summer has gone by so quickly, but doesn't it always? I've really liked the day camp thing. I've got my own class, and it's kind of like school, but I can do whatever fun things I want. And there are no requirements for the kids to participate, so there's no coercion involved. Usually. It's nice. I'd do it again, if they give me a pay raise and decrease my hours. 8 1/2 hour shifts have blown more of my summer daylight than I'd like.

My mom's coming to visit in a month. What on earth is there to do in Fairbanks in late August? Must think some more about that.

In honor of my 27th birthday I am posting the results of googling "liz is." Apparently, this is what the internet thinks of me.

Liz is available for speaking engagements anywhere in the USA and Western Canada
Liz is a hot tempered babe with an insatiable desire
finally, Liz is smiling
liz is a big %&$*#@ baby
au contraire, Liz is listening to what you say
Liz is an organized disorganized person
Liz is just as hot as Katie
Liz is also a member of the the all-women vocal group Singin' Sistahs
liz is actually liked by the less fortunate members of the student body
liz is currently 23 weeks along now and feeling quite uncomfortable with 12 arms and legs poking at her 24 hours a day
liz is thoroughly devoted to her lovebird tweety
Liz is smart and brave
Liz is a city big on surprises and has an unbeatable mix of holiday sensations
Liz is quite stupid isn't she? i know it's amazing
Liz is kinda "busy" fitting in yet another customer right now
Liz is fed up of taking her clothes off on the big screen
Liz is as lucky as she is shrewd
Liz is a majestic presence
Liz is a tour de force of imagination
Liz is the result of a genetic experiment manipulated by diana
Liz is very hard to find
Liz is through liberating the beans from their shells
Liz is skipping leisurely to her dorm room after she has grabbed a little bite to eat at the mcdonald's in davis square
Liz is reluctant to do so
Liz is a very clever lady and something of a geek
Liz is clearly an imposter

27th trip around the sun? Not so bad. R got me a lovely shower curtain and a yoga ball to sit on at my desk. I wanted one– it's good for your back and also kinda fun. I'm not a dork, really. No cake for me this year, but I did get the cheesecake assortment from Fred Meyer. We don't have any birthday candles, but maybe I can blow out some taper candles? Or maybe I'll just pantomime.

We are safely moved, though it will be many trips to and from the storage unit before it's all in here– if indeed we can fit everything we own in this house. And why can't we fit all of our belongings in a 3 bedroom house, you ask? Because it's full of someone else's things! Don't get me wrong– the fact that we get this house for totally nominal rent and have lots of room to run around and washer and dryer and a garage is a good thing. Having to use someone else's shoddy, outdated appliances and utensils is not. Hopefully most of the shoddy things will be replaced with our own things, soon.

We've been riding our bikes every night, and last night rode to the ice cream parlor. Is that cheating? Hey, at least we're out there using up some of that eternal daylight.

Happy 4th! We'll be celebrating inside a nice air conditioned theater, though we have made an effort to go outside some this weekend. Yesterday we went for a bike ride and played mini golf at the ghetto course at Pioneer Park (née Alaskaland). The course is really a big POS, with astroturf peeling up and muddy water all around. By the end of the 36 holes we were no longer keeping score, and were surreptitiously kicking the ball into the hole. But we're good sports.

The cat is much better with the whole ginormous splint thing, but he now has a cold. The cold is supposedly brought on by stress, so wait until he hears we're moving again tomorrow. Alas. Finally, the house we're moving into is being vacated and we'll be free of the basement. :) I'll let you know how the move goes– should be better this time as we're doing it in stages.
